A student making a career choice originates from the school itself. Many students fall prey to peer pressure and select a career which his/her peers choose without understanding their interests and aptitude. To help students select a suitable career for themselves without peer pressure, career counseling for students is a must.

A student chooses a course to pursue a career. If he/she doesn’t select a course that suits his/her interest or aptitude, then they face the repercussions in the future in their professional fields. Schools can play an important role in helping prevent students from making wrong career choices and encourage them to make a correct career choice. Psychometric tests are a means through which a student can get to know their interests and capabilities. But knowing the interests and abilities is not enough, the counselors should guide the students to make a career choice that fits both his interests and aptitude.

For example, a student is not good at Math but has an interest in architecture. The question arises which career option do they choose? A school counselor should analyze the report and explain it to the student and tell them the career options that match their interests and aptitude along with stating its advantages and disadvantages. 

When the students do not have the correct source to go to, they end up taking advice from people who they think are experienced. But the advice may not be the correct one. Students get influenced by their successful peers and aim to reach the same height of success. The parents don’t understand the demands of the latest professions so they cannot guide their children to select a correct career. 

The schools should appoint career counselors who can be available to assist students in their career choices or difficulties in choosing a career option to help them have clarity of thought.

Career choice is a decision that has to be taken with the utmost precision as it can break or make one’s future. 24% is the average time spent in a lifetime in a typical 50 years of employment. To get through such a long period, people need to love what they do and it can begin from the correct course a student selects. 

A career counselor identifies a student’s potential and guides him/her to pursue a career that ensures career success. The schools should encourage students to take help in the duration of choosing a career by appointing a career counselor in schools. Having a career counseling cell is the first step a school makes to help its students select a course that would match the potential of the students.
